Tarn-Pure Ltd owns the Tarn-Pure™ brand, and manufactures, sells, installs, services and maintains Tarn-Pure equipment. Tarn-Pure has pioneered copper-silver ionisation since 1981, when the initial application was swimming pools. In the mid-1980s it was realised that copper-silver ionisation could make a major contribution to the control and elimination of legionella, which had only been isolated in hospital water systems in the UK in 1985, when a major outbreak at the Stafford District General Hospital led to 22 deaths.

Since then, more than any other brand, Tarn-Pure has been associated with the development of copper-silver ionisation as a biocide for the control and elimination of legionella and other water-borne bacteria. Consequently, our technical development team has always been at the forefront of the application of this important technology. For this reason, Tarn-Pure equipment has been chosen by research scientists all over the world as the standard for long-term and other studies into the benefits of copper-silver ionisation.

Tarn-Pure ionisation also makes a major contribution to controlling surface infection in hospital wards, food preparation facilities, the laundry, toilets and bathrooms, acting as a supplementary biocide to normal cleaning procedures. This holistic approach only becomes possible because of the long-lasting residual effect of copper-silver ionisation.

The future

We believe that existing regulations and practice in the UK and Europe do not necessarily take account of improved knowledge of legionella control methods. Furthermore, the increased cost of energy and chemicals, together with escalating maintenance costs associated with thermal and chemical solutions have become major issues. Assessment of the environmental impact is a major management consideration, with the phased introduction of Energy Performance Certificates from October 2008 in the UK.

With regard to efficacy, the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is taking the lead in revising guidelines, as foreshadowed by Dr Janet Stout in her ASHRAE journal article in October 2007. Tarn-Pure welcomes the  recognition that copper-silver ionisation is consistent with best practice, and will continue to develop the technology.

Tarn-Pure ionisation is also the most environmentally responsible approach to water disinfection. Its saves energy consumption and saves on chemical usage.

Our mission is simply to provide the most effective solution to this important problem.
